orkus club hits 1

v/a (2000)

once again orkus puts its name and years of experience behind this dance hit compilation. for anyone following the scene it would present almost nothing new, showcasing best club-oriented material that came out this year – from covenant, l’ame immortelle, vnv nation, in strict confidence to yendri, funker vogt and other big names.

if you are not tired of hearing exactly the same songs in the clubs, definitely pick this compilation – cream of the crop in the floor-oriented electro of today, no matter what the critics say.

i would not even bring this compilation up, except maybe for speculating on how orkus’es attitude towards putting out compilation with well-known material, is not something to be frowned at by hardcore collectors, and is not merely an attempt to cash in on the famous artists, but they present the best way to get into this music for the newcomers. the “brand recognition” of orkus and high professionalism allow them to become the first place anyone would look for music in this genre.

but I digress, the main reason I brought this compilation up is “tears of time” by crematory – the last track on this disk. when I first saw the name of the band on this comp, I could not believe my eyes - was it really crematory, the gothic metal band I was a huge fan of 4-5 years ago? And was it really theirs “tears of time” – one of my favorite tracks?

few minutes into the track almost gave me a heart attack – it was indeed crematory, but an excellent trance mix, blending dark atmospherics that the band was famous for, together with the original growling vocals and all on top of killer trance beat with crescendos and classical genre build-ups. maybe it were just memories it stirred, I remember listening to “transmigration”, “…just dreaming” and “illusions,” their spell is coming back with each time I listen to “tears of time.” I am almost afraid to get my hands on their latest “believe,” especially after quite disappointing recent tiamat release.

there is always something in discovering such fragments of your past, transformed yet holding those intangible moments dear to you. especially in music, when after a certain time you realize what music can really be considered timeless, no matter how many years pass since its original release.
