trylok (2000)

i had quite mixed feelings about this cd. at first i almost set it aside right away, appalled by vocals and a sound that appeared a bit too dated. but somehow I kept putting the cd back into the cd player, persuading myself each time that I wanted to make sure how bad it was. one of the tracks that finally won me over was mix of “radioactivity” by kraftwerk. this track, being one of my favorites by kraftwerk, has been transformed into dynamic and rich composition with lush strings and dense percussion arrangements, taking this track on a new level. only vocals (as usual with trylok) seems to be out of place.

the last statement is pretty much true for all the material on this cd – vocals is the first thing that strikes you as highly unnatural, and it took me a long time to set it aside and enjoy the music. half of this cd is new material that falls into the category of melodic electro with very catchy and clean arrangements, pure yet dense and fluid compositions and lush orchestrations. first few tracks (“mysterious girl”, “resurrection” and “silence”) follow this pattern. later on the cd ventures nto more spacey arrangements of instrumental “floating” and following it dreamy “extemporize.”

I have to especially mention forma tadre’s mix of “shame”, it has the spirit that made “navigator” so successful at the same time adding more minimal elements that surfaced on “automate”. colossal orchestrated passages trade places with minimal percussion and sparse bizarre samples. other mixes are done by dark illumination, new mind, anstalt, sabotage.

this is a cd that could be easily overlooked, but for those that have time and patience, it will be a worthwhile experience.
