6 katun

passarani (2000)

after "unspeakable future outbreaks" that became part of my top 10 lat year, and very impressive "ancient technology" released early this year, I was quite impatient to hear the new release from marco passarani. meanwhile I was getting more of his earlier material that displayed how different "unspeakable future outbreaks" was compared to a lot lighter flavor of techno and idm of his earlier albums.

after listening to "6 katun" for the first time, I was quite disappointed by rigid, almost traditional idm approach displayed on the cd. it reminded me of multitude of pretentious idm bands bending backwards to build pseudo-intelligent tracks.

however, soon enough I rediscovered this album. starting with my favorites like "6 katun" and "eaxade" that sounded a bit strange in faster interpretation compared to "ancient technology," it started growing on me and suddenly I have noticed deep beautiful melodic movements that have always attracted me in his material. soft glowing strings and warm fluid motives blend seamlessly with intricate percussion that playfully moves from analog 80s sounds to edgier drum&bass powered rhythms reminding me of "unspeakable future outbreaks." on every track there exists a contrast of small analog noises with a "childish" feel and monumental melodic movements filled with gorgeous strings.

it is really hard to pinpoint my absolute favorites on this album, at this point I am enjoying all the different sides presented on this cd - from soft charm of "green cycle" to heavier and more percussion-oriented "new wave 2" that displays a peculiar balance of 80s glamour and edgy drum&bass overtones (similar to almost technoid and surprisingly heavy "new wave 3" as well as fast-paced and dense "floid"). "mokotryde" offers a very unique and catchy combination of comforting melody and persistent percussion, going through several changes throughout the track.

it would be hard to classify this album without falling into the traps of overused clichés. at this point I am perfectly content with more "crunchy" and "happier" sound of this disk. its charm is hidden in the harmonious combination of deeply emotional strings and vast number of peculiar percussion, moving from mysterious soundscapes to sun-lit percussion playgrounds. romantic yet playful atmosphere of this disk is constructed from the memories of past few decades and modern ideals. and, as expected from passarani's work, I discover more and more details and themes hidden in every track, making it a good match for the rest of my "best of" passarani collection.
