tribal globe

monolith (1999)

quite frankly, i was not expecting much from this release (true for almost all daft releases). previous disk by monolith was a bit too repetitive, and there was not much happening throughout the tracks.

this time around, the band decided to change the formula by introducing more elements into the mix. additional tribal percussion and voice samples considerably enhanced the atmosphere. the music is still very repetitive and mesmerizing, the tracks take a while to build up; however they put the listener into a certain trance by pounding distorted loops with slight variations and strings mixed with tribal overtones ("dreams of a journey" definitely stands out, actually mixing all the elements mentioned above and even throwing strings on top - the result being an electro/tribal sound with dislocated beats, lush strings and very distinct atmosphere). listen closely enough, and you will find something interesting in each track - being a nice key sequence on top of repetitive distorted percussion ("dreams of a journey"), or a unique ambience created by monotonous rhythms ("tribal globe"), the stone idols of haiti awakening at the dawn of new millenium ("nomad"), variety of clashing and reverberating beats on "pulse".

definitely, an improvement in comparison with previous release, but be warned - the "trademark" daft sound is still present.
