session 04

a few days ago I have been re-listening to the three vinyls from "the hed nod sessions" series that I own. played a few times in succession, they perfectly match the definition of "late night groove."

as many of you know, initially hed nod has been created as a hushush side label to specifically release material by mick harris, currently it is expanding further into the dub terror area, starting with the excellent "low end recon" compilation.

starting with the "visiting officer" - a very first track on this vinyl - you are immersed in this very distinct atmosphere that some label as terror dub or illbient. the music is characterized with deep hypnotizing basslines, steady and slow percussion drops. soon enough one finds oneself nodding along the deliberately measured rhythm, spiced by little splashes of dramatic keys. or take "shorting" for example - fully justifying "killer beats" slogan of hed nod - groovy, monotonous, heavy elongated percussion drops set the mysterious, cold atmosphere of this track.

compared to "session 03" this release is a little more somber, lacking some of the sublte jazziness and hip hop influences of "session 03".

once you start listening to it in the appropriate setting, you realize how unbelievably cool is this minimal, mysterious, and pleasantly dark music. hypnotic dark energy, carefully calculated precision in each percussion drop, cold distant synthlines - everything palced together perfectly in a distinct simple manner that anyone familiar with the genre will immediately recognize. transparent heavy vinyl is the perfect media for this music, get this one before all the 300 numbered copies are sold out as fast as the previous installments have.
