the collapsing void

malignant follows its very focused line of releases with "dj" stone glass steel. if you keep "dj" in mind, then the introduction of nin, lords of acid, and kmfdm samples into the tracks will become understandable. the album consists of two parts - a live performance and a compilation of studio material over several years.

the first part of the album is more rhythmic and structured. abrasive noise beats mix nicely with atmospheric pieces. heavy slow bass and beats create a vibrating menacing background; the atmosphere is solid and keeps its ambience despite constant changes. this is an amazing dj set (with well-known samples blending into the music), but as a cd it might grow monotonous at times.

the second part of the album is more ambient and atmospheric. a nice background music that might gain a slightly rough edge at times, but remains cold and quiet.

overall, half of the album is quite enjoyable mixing ambience and heavy percussion, the rest is too ambient and i find myself unable to keep up with the music.
