deine lakaien (1999)

truly a “dark jewel” of the electronic scene. the band has been around for over 10 years, but this is the first album that I came across. the music itself is a blend of classic instruments (violin, piano), danceable beats, dark synths. the result is fascinating. mix of classic instruments, electronic, and amazing voice of alexander veljanov are the strongest features of the band. it is amazing how well they all blend together creating a really homogenic atmosphere. very beautiful, delicate, warm, and charming with a touch of melancholy. the band balances between synth-pop, darkwave, electronica taking the best from each genre.

the monumental beautiful tracks like “into my arms” might be actually called darkwave, but they are too warm and delicate for that. alexander’s voice is deep and extremely powerful. it dominates every track, supported by the melody. the music is seducing and enchanting. some tracks (“kasmodiah”, “into my arms”, “sometimes”) definitely have folk feeling (something that reminded me of goth-metal bands of early 90s from sweden and netherlands). the music is really earthly - nordic scenery, wide open fields, forests, rivers come to mind immideately. beautiful mysterious lyrics (all english with a slight german accent that makes it soo cooool and addictive).

every track deserves mentioning so I’ll pick some at random: “return” – a masterpiece, one of the best tracks on the album that has all the features deine lakaien is known for. “kiss the future” – a fast-paced track, incredibly catchy and beautiful with danceable beats. “the game” – piano and voice with occasional electronic beats and violin; nice lyrics. tender and beautiful. “my shadows” – a bit poppy, danceable track. “lass mich” – a creepy fast track featuring german lyrics, noisy beats. nothing like the rest of the album, but still interesting.
