the wonderful and frightening world of black lung

black lung (1999)
anton · July 23, 1999

on this cd modern music is viewed through distorted and twisted vision of d.thrussel. it is truly "wonderful and frightening world of black lung".

the tracks range from noisy electro to minimalistic soundscapes distorted with sudden harsh beats; occasional synth, bassline or cacophonic raw feedback are added to the mix together with strange distorted drum'n'bass pieces, mysterious samples and breakbeats. the variety of elements used is amazing; the music is never predictable, but the atmosphere created is solid and amazingly real. the music is too mechanical to reflect human feelings, but the forms that it creates are beautiful in their sonic perfection. by using the essence of musical elements the beauty is created.

first disk starts out with fast-paced tracks with strong rhythmic beats drowned in the chaotic noise and twisted drum'n'bass; later on it slows down and gains complexity. second disk builds up from slow and transparent pieces to extremely fast-paced and abrasive songs ("trema", "humint") that are followed by quiet and menacing tracks concluding the album.

the best and most recognizable tracks are "question one" (almost danceable melodic track), "rhic-edom" (complex track with rolling pumping beats and melodic waves built around them), "humint" (distorted harsh rhythm-and-noise track), "the club of smokers" (slow dense song with harsh beats that are twisted and squeezed), "inconherent mass insanity" (strange bass line, clean high-pitched beats, random unexpected melody turns), "robust rhythmic distraction" (rhythm-and-noise at its best), "isolated media receptacle" (constantly changing fast-paced track with amazing drum programming), "question two" (harsh distorted drum'n'bass), "bureaucratic gadget grip" (complex and constantly changing track that ranges from clean soundscapes to short aggressive sonic attacks), "domint" (slow, thick, reversed, noisy), "consumer inertia soup" (noisy breakbeats and dense sound with occasional quiet cold pieces).

this is a _must_ for every fan of experimental and intelligent music. it is a journey to the twisted synthetic world of minimal structures, cold empty spaces, strange changing shapes. it is music that hurts and mesmerizes and keeps your attention.
