great architect
i have been trying to hunt down this album since its release in august 1999. it is tempting to label black lung as a "spillover" of the snog material, the way it used to be with the first black lung releases, but latest albums stand on their own, being a creative outlet for the material that is more experimental than snog. on each disk black lung creates fantastic collage of nightmarish images, a unique flavor of technoid psychosis. the sheer variety of sounds, samples, loops used is astonishing.
thrussel likes to play on contrasts, assaulting unexpected listener with barrage of feedback after a moment of tranquility; a great number of funky sounds and noises gain a whole different meaning in the unreal world of black lung.
the disk starts out with distorted modem handshake (something that was used by snog as well) - and the fun begins with "gizmo prediction fallout". minimal rhythmic percussion progressing to irritating levels accurately balancing on the brink of being intolerable. dissonant frequencies, unexpected eruptions of static create inhumanly cold atmosphere, building the sound structures with incredible precision.
"unorthodox abnormality broadcast" is yet another track built upon heavy repetitive percussion. twisted analog sounds and torn sci-fi themes create a bizarre atmosphere. "downtime disco dementia" builds upon ambient textures that get overlaid with nightmarish thrashing disco rhythm. "surreal opinion stimulator" uses hard minimal techno background together with experimental sounds building and deconstructing around it.
despite its name, black lung is an antidote for stale music scene; precise, sparse and accurate, it is a barrage of dirty feedback and frequencies spinning out of control, minimal repetitive techno elements and masterfully executed unique sonic passages.
surreal atmosphere of the disk is enhanced even further with bizarre song names. as usual with black lung releases, you get lost in the dreamlike chaotic world build by the great architect.
