bad sector (1995)

ever since I got to hear this album, I have felt its presence around me. it was an instant, immediate recognition of a superior, incredible work. I have been under its spell for a few weeks now, which, if you consider the release date, proves it to be a timeless music work.

italian massimo magrini is the soul behind this project; recording and releasing material since 1992, bad sector managed to compile an impressive discography. mr. magrini uses highly "scientific" and methodical approach to music making. he utilizes a widest variety of digital and analog samples coming from various sources, be it recordings by soviet satellites, neon tubes electromagnetic field, echocardiogram machine, sonars. all those found sound sources create a peculiar raw, low-fi atmosphere. at the same time, despite this conceptualism, the main appeal of bad sector are cinematic, heavy ambient textures, often overlaid with strings.

"ampos" is the first full-length album by bad sector. it appears to be more minimal and simpler than subsequent releases. i find this simplicity one of the most impressive parts of the music. it is interesting to correlate that with my latest glitch music kick. come to think of it, this deep humming, small pulses, cuts, glitches, and other random found noises create delicate, fragile sound structure, so familiar to any clicks&cuts zealot. this sonic construction is covered with massive blanket of suffocating, dark ambient, that often rises to monumental proportions, contrasted by cold beautiful strings.

"ampos" was a striking revelation, opening the whole world of bad sector to me. later albums might appear to be more complex, or more melodic, but this genuine, raw, emotional sound of this album is what always sets it apart for me.
